Empowering Girls today for tomorrow

The 9th of January 2011 is a day that Martha Mweeta will remember for a life time. ‘It is the first time I’m participating in such an activity , I have learnt a lot and I’m happy to be here’ says the thirteen years old grade 7 Zambian Girl who participated in the Girls Empowerment Training.
Martha is not alone. For the girls in her community between the ages of 10-16 years old participating in the Girls Empowerment Training in Kamwala –Zambia leaves an indelible mark in their hearts and lives.

After a motivational talk, the eight girls were engaged in self-empowerment activities such as reflecting, dreaming, writing and drawing what they dreamed of becoming; brainstorming and designing what community and world they want to see and live in and how they make it happen.
After writing and drawing the girls were asked to present their work to the group. One by one they presented from dreaming practicing medicine to teaching. ‘I want to become a teacher to help the vulnerable children in my community to become responsible people and live well says Judith one of the participants. Answering how they intended achieve their dreams Mary says ‘I need to study hard and pass at school’.

I am excited and looking forward to my mentor’ says Mary as the programme comes to an end.
